Children's Ministry

Overview

We believe that our children are a gift from the Lord and are extremely valuable to Him (Psalm 127:3). Because of this, we desire to train our children up in the fear of the Lord, to know Him and serve Him. We "have no greater joy than to hear that [our] children walk in truth" (III John 1:4). Toward that end, the Upper Room offers Sunday school classes for children ages 2 through 6th grade, an infant and toddler nursery, junior high and high school classes, a monthly children's worship service, and various other activities for children and youth.

Sunday School Schedule

Families worship together for the first 45 minutes of the service. Children are then dismissed to their classes for approximately an hour and fifteen minutes of Children’s Ministry time.

Curriculum

The Children's Ministry is currenlty using a curiculum put together by one of our members.  It divides the children into three age groups: two year olds through four year olds, kindergarteners through second graders, and third graders through sixth graders.  The two year olds through four year olds spend their time focusing on the main Biblical stories and learning about and experiencing prayer.  They also meet with the kindergarten through second graders at the beginning of each class time to learn a Scripture memory verse set to music.  The goal for this age group is to familiarize them with the Bible and with talking to God.  Kindergarten through second grade focuses more in depth on the Biblical stories and draws deeper lessons from them.  This age group also continues to work on Bible memorization and growth in personal prayer.  The third through sixth grade class's focus is doctrine.  By this point they should be fairly familiar with the Biblical stories and so this group seeks to go deeper, asking questions like Who is the Holy Spirit? and teaching truths like the sacrifical Blood of Jesus.  As these children go deeper in their study of who God is and what He has done, the goal is that they would be led by the Holy Spirit into a deeper personal walk with Him.  The over-arching goal of this multi-layered curiculum is that by the time a child reaches the sixth grade they will have a good Biblical foundation and a growing personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Leadership Training

Early each summer, the junior high and high school youth are given the opportunity to participate in a short leadership training program called LIGHT (Leadership Institute Glorifying Him Together). Those who successfully complete the program are given the opportunity to serve in Children’s Ministry during the summer months.

Teachers

The Upper Room Children’s Ministry is made possible by the faithful cooperation of more than 80 adults and youth from the fellowship each year. Teachers and helpers faithfully minister to our children each Sunday, using their creativity to communicate God's truth in understandable and real ways.
